Joy Beveridge’s Bequest Will Ensure Her Future Support of Hood College

Joy Miller Beveridge ’82

Joy Miller Beveridge ’82 says attending Hood College was one of the two best decisions she ever made. The second was marrying her husband of 41 years, Don, whom she met while attending Hood.

“Hood College was only four years of my life, but it made a significant and lasting impression,” Joy says. “The friendships have remained, and the skills learned were integral to my successful career.”

In gratitude, the Beveridges have included an unrestricted bequest to Hood in their estate plan. “This vehicle gives us the most flexibility because we have not yet decided the final amount/percentage of the gift,” Joy says. “I trust their judgment entirely. I hope our gift will fill a need that the College determines most valid.”

As a student, Joy participated in intercollegiate athletics and intramural sports and was a member of Tri-Beta (Biology Honor Society). “I had the opportunity to learn from outstanding faculty and coaches who were fully committed to their students and athletes,” she says.

Now retired, Joy enjoyed a 34-year career supporting clinical research in cancer and other infectious diseases. While at Hood, she was introduced to the laboratories at Fort Detrick and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). “I had a summer internship at Fort Detrick,” she says. “And I was employed by the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research for the last 21 years of my career supporting the NIH.”

She has been an involved alum from the start. “Whenever Hood calls, I answer!” says Joy, who is an active member of the Executive Alumni Board and the Board of Associates and a volunteer.

Joy hopes that others will consider the importance of giving now and during estate planning. “We need to make sure Hood College remains a pillar of the Frederick community for many generations to come.”
