Steuart’s Estate-Plan Gifts Provide Valuable Alumni Support to Hood

Carrie Steuart, B.A. ’80

Carrie Steuart, B.A. ’80, fondly remembers the spring weekend during her senior year of high school when she and her parents visited Hood College from their home in Upstate New York. “It happened to be Dad and Daughter Weekend,” Carrie says. “I think my father fell in love with the campus not only because of the beautiful Georgian architecture (I remember him saying it looked like a movie set upon our arrival!), but also because he was already looking forward to being the visiting ‘Dad’ the following spring.”

As part of her smart estate planning with her husband of 20 years, Mark Plumb, Carrie is giving back to Hood through a bequest in her will and by naming the College as a beneficiary of her IRA. “I’ve always felt a responsibility to give to Hood. I’m very grateful to have attended Hood when I did, and I know that alumni support is critical to its future,” Carrie says. “I would like to help the College continue to offer a similar small-college experience to students who can benefit from all that Hood offers.”

Because of that “small-college experience,” Carrie thrived at Hood and says she “participated in sports and activities that I probably would not have been able to at a larger school. Academically, smaller classes allowed me the freedom to speak up and not be intimidated as I may have been in a different setting.”

Carrie has left her gifts unrestricted to be used in the areas of greatest need. “I’ve always understood how important donations are to sustaining the work of the College and that no amount is too small,” she says. “I also want to know that Hood College will continue to be a vital part of the Frederick community as it has been for more than 125 years.”
