Homer W. Carhart ‘05

Homer W. Carhart and his wife Julia Holzapfel Carhart

Homer W. Carhart, Ph.D., LHD '07, was introduced to Hood College by his then-bride, the late Julia Holzapfel Carhart '30. An advocate for education and a man of many interests, Homer was a frequent visitor to the Hood campus. He passed away in December 2011.

Homer believed in giving back. In honor of his wife, he endowed the Julia Holzapfel Carhart Prize in Mathematics. He later established the Homer W. Carhart Guest Pianist Fund and, in collaboration with Carla Rollandini, CSA, CT '05, his senior advisor and friend, the Dana Cable Thanatology Lecture Fund. A supporter of the Coffman Chapel Organ Restoration Fund, Homer was often seen and heard in Coffman Chapel playing the Moller pipe organ. He attended lectures and concerts and audited classes on campus.

Homer ensured the continual support of his priorities by providing additional contributions to the four funds he has established through his estate. Homer believed in Hood and recognized that students here receive a first-class education in a strong and supportive environment. His generosity both during his lifetime and beyond will enable generations of students to have an enriched liberal arts education and experiences far beyond the classroom.
